FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions:

    • How much does it cost to get a license?
      • Cost can vary depending on each student and their pace. There will be a few different considerations. Your books and supplies, flight gear, aircraft cost, instructor cost. You should at the very least budget $7,000 for your private pilots license. Aircraft: Approximately $125/hour, Instructor: Ground/Flight $65/hour
      • How long will it take?
        • Again this depends on the students commitment and dedication. Weather permitting you can complete the required training in as little as 10 days. However, a good recommended pace would be 3 days a week. 1 lesson a day to begin. Expect 2-3 hours per lesson with about 1.5 hours flying the aircraft. The more time you invest in a shorter period of time, the better the chances of retaining that information over the course of your training. In other words being current will not only make you a safer and better pilot, but it will also end up saving you money as you progress efficiently.
        • What aircraft can I fly?
          • The most common, and my favorite would be the Cessna 172. A 4 seater notoriously safe and reliable trainer. Has the appropriate room, weight allowance and flight characteristics that make it the best training aircraft in the world. I’m 6’3 and fit comfortably in a Cessna 172. Cessna 150’s are the 2 seater variant that often cannot carry anymore than 1 pilot and fuel.
          • Where do you provide instruction?
            • Based in South Central Wisconsin. However, as an independent contractor I can travel anywhere in the country to provide instruction. If you have any needs for training outside of Wisconsin. Please reach out with your specific requirements and arrangements can be made accordingly.
            • Can you instruct me in my own plane?
              • Yes
              • Do I have to stick with the same instructor throughout my training?
                • It’s been my experience that students are not clearly told that there is no obligation to fly with any one instructor. I can fly with you as your instructor from zero to commercial and beyond, or any point in between. If for some reason you don’t get along with your Instuctor, I highly recommend finding one you mesh with better for a smooth and progressive training experience.
                • How much homework will I have?
                  • Expect to have a 1:1 ratio of flying to home study. For every hour of flight there will be a corresponding hour of “homework”. As an aviator you will get used to phrase “be ahead of your airplane”, apply that to your ground study as well. Put in the time before you even begin flying so you will have a solid foundation and maximize your time and money. Online ground school referenced below.
                  • Can I start studying before I fly?
                    • Yes, you absolutely can and I highly recommend it. Put in the time before you even begin flying so you will have a solid foundation and maximize your time and money. This will allow you to limit the number of hours of one on one ground study with  me. 40 hours of ground with me will be boring and expensive compared to a couple hundred bucks online course that will be on your time and you can always go back and watch videos during your training to reference maneuvers and procedures from our lessons. In fact I watched videos prior to every lesson so I could be well prepared.
                    • What is the best option to complete my ground school?
                      • There are two different softwares. One to beat the test and one to actually learn the material. I highly recommend both. First learn it, then use the other software to make sure you get a 100. Find out more via the contact form.
                      • Sporty’s PPL is what I used personally for my test I also use their software for my lessons and highly recommend it. If you decide to go with Sporty’s please use the following media code to support your instructor: FLT10459
                      • Is there an age requirement?
                        • Yes. While you can take flying lessons at any age, a student pilot must be 16 to solo and 17 to be eligible for the Private Pilot certificate.
                        • After I get my Private Pilot certificate, can I rent a plane on my own?
                          • Yes. After earning your Private Pilot certificate, you can rent the same airplane model without additional instruction. You can also schedule instruction to become proficient in other aircraft types. The training required for aircraft “checkouts” will vary by type of aircraft. You will find airports and rental services all around the country.
